Gaba in Tremor Supplements

Gaba in Tremor Supplements

Essential tremors is one of the most prevalent movement conditions, mainly affecting those older in age. However, scientists, doctors, and research experts have been unable to pinpoint the actual problem and its origin in the brain for a long time. The GABA hypothesis somehow answers these questions. GABA is also known as (gamma-aminobutyric acid). It is produced in the brain. It regulates the activities of the brain because it is a neurotransmitter or chemical messenger.

It accomplishes this by "binding" (connecting) with outer membrane receptors of a nerve cell (neuron) in the brain, similar to how a key fits a lock perfectly.

Components of Anti-tremor Supplements

There are many natural or herbal products; supplements are available, having anti-tremor effects. They usually contain herbal extracts, minerals, and vitamins for improving physical and mental health. Along with other benefits, they are also used for brain health, such as cognitive function and anti-tremor effects. Many natural anti-tremor supplements are available in the market with variable ingredients.

However, the following are the common ingredients in tremor supplements.

  • Magnesium citrate
  • Curcumin
  • N-acetyl cysteine
  • Taurine
  • B vitamins (B2, B12, folic acid)
  • L-tyrosine
  • Valerian extract
  • Methylcobalamin
  • Passionflower

Similarly, some anti-tremor supplements also contain GABA (gamma-aminobutyric). The function of GABA in anti-tremor supplements is to reduce tremors by inducing calmness and reducing anxiety temporarily.

The major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the human cortex is GABA and can be successful for all pharmacological therapies for ET, boosting the GABA-ergic neurotransmitter system. Even a beta-blocker like propranolol, in addition to its peripheral effects, may increase central GABA sensitivity.

Not many studies support the use of oral GABA supplementation in ET patients and given the relatively substantial pathophysiological basis for GABA tone in the pathophysiology of the disease. Therefore, more research into dietary GABA supplementation in ET patients is recommended.

Sources of GABA

The presence of GABA in anti-tremor supplements may come from various sources. There are many natural sources of GABA, including

  • Brown rice
  • Almonds
  • Bananas
  • Broccoli
  • Beans
  • Eggs
  • Walnuts
  • Spinach

Precautions of GABA Supplement

You must consult your healthcare professionals before using anti-tremor supplements containing GABA because high amounts of GABA cause shortness of breath, tingling, and numbness in the legs and increases anxiety.

If you experience rashes, chest pain, lightheadedness, or drowsiness, immediately discontinue the supplement and talk to your doctor.

Recommended Daily Dose

Although there is no reported RDA for GABA, supplementary dosages have been proposed for some of the most frequent disorders, including tremors. Always consult with your primary health care physician before starting any supplement to ensure no contraindications to taking it.

The anti-tremor effect of GABA is linked with lowering stress levels. Therefore, the recommended dose of GABA in case of stress is 250mg three times daily.
